It is always best to begin with the basics in whatever field you are entering. It is highly recommended that anyone entering this field become knowledgeable in Childbirth Education and experienced in teaching and training expectant parents, providing valuable information for the prenatal period, labor and postpartum period. As elementary as this may sound at first, the field of Childbirth Education is deep and rich, yet sadly neglected. Multitudes of women give birth without proper instruction in preparation of motherhood, often resulting in unnecessary interventions and problems. Proper prenatal care cannot be emphasized enough.

The next step I recommend is Doula training. A Doula’s services include that of a Childbirth Educator, but also help the clients develop birthing plans, perform labor assistance with coaching and comfort measures, and help with advocacy between the client and healthcare giver. Doulas may provide valuable emotional and physical comfort to the mother.

After experiencing a few births as a Doula, one may realize they are really not called to the field of midwifery. The time and effort along with the weight of responsibility often proves too overwhelming for some. On the other hand, this experience may tend to sharpen the conviction that God is calling one into this noble profession. May the Lord grant wisdom and discernment as we seek His counsel in this field.
